About Groote Peel National Park

Groote Peel National Park, located on the border of the provinces of Limburg and North Brabant in the southern Netherlands, is a protected peat bog landscape of about 1,000 hectares (2,470 acres). The park preserves one of the last remnants of the large Peel moorlands and is characterized by its wet peatlands, pools, marshes, reed beds, and heathlands. Its unique ecosystem supports a rich variety of flora and fauna, including rare plants, insects, and birds such as black-necked grebes, bitterns, and cranes, making it a prime destination for ornithologists and wildlife observers. Historically, the moor was exploited for peat extraction, but since protection efforts began in the early 20th century, the park has been managed for conservation and recreation. Visitors can explore an extensive network of well-maintained boardwalks and trails that wind through the marshy landscape, allowing close-up views of the delicate habitats without disturbing them. The park offers peaceful opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, photography, and educational nature programs at the visitor center. The visitor center also provides exhibitions that describe the park’s natural and cultural history. Groote Peel’s moorland environment is a tranquil refuge for both wildlife and visitors, especially during migration seasons when the birdlife is especially dynamic. Its accessibility, natural beauty, and emphasis on conservation make Groote Peel an essential destination for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful outdoor experience in the Netherlands.
